The end of summer is here and my family and I have been quite busy. Since we can’t travel as much as we would like to, we enjoy going on roads trips. With Canada celebrating their 150th birthday this year, my hubby and I decided that we would do some research to find places within our beautiful country to take the kids to. In order to show them just how lucky they are to be Canadian. Going on road trips can be stressful with a car full of kids yelling “Are we there yet!” so what I like to do is pack a few essentials that will not only keep them occupied it will also give this mama a peace of mind while travelling. Some must haves I like to bring along for the road trips are:

  • Books
  • Ipad with downloaded shows
  • Healthy snacks to limit the stops we make along the way
  • Earphones for myself and the kids so I can’t hear their shows playing at once and lastly an eye mask for when I want to take a snooze.I am telling you, this list has saved us a lot of meltdowns and migraines along the way.

So far we have visited a few places on our list of adventures. In between our road trips, car maintenance becomes a routine for us. Since our main source of travel is by a car making sure that our vehicle is in good working order is very important for our safety. My husband is a Mechanic by trade so if you can imagine, I know a thing or two about car care. One important factor in a vehicle running smoothly is making sure to keep up with scheduled oil changes.

That means keeping track of your mileage, typically an oil change should be done every 3 months. Changing the oil in a car is pretty easy to do even for first timers. You can literally change the oil in a car faster than packing it up for a road trip. But if you’ve never changed the oil in your car follow my tips and you will be ready to take on your next road trip before you know it.

We like to use high-quality durable oil in our family vehicle, we have tried a few different brands in order to decide what the best fit was for the type of vehicle we have and they way it’s driven. But nothing has lived up to the quality like Quaker State® Ultimate Durability™ Full Synthetic Motor Oil. Anytime we need to change the oil, we head over to our local Canadian Tire which is literally around the corner from my house. When we get there he heads to the car maintenance section and I go my way, straight to the kitchen and home needs section. If you have never been to Canadian Tire or are not familiar with the store, it’s basically your ultimate one stop shop for vehicle and home needs.

Now for the fun part, changing the oil is a piece of cake. There are a few materials you will need before changing the oil, here is what you will need: Engine Oil, Plastic Sheet, Jacks, Jack stands, Container for used oil, Wrench* size depends on drain plug*

The whole process shouldn’t take more than 30 minutes.

Step 1 Drain oil: raise vehicle to remove engine oil drain plug

Step 2 Oil Filter: remove and replace engine oil filter make sure to lubricate new oil filter seal.

Step 3 Fill with new oil: find oil fill cap under the hood, fill with new oil * fill oil one litre at a time checking in between with oil dipstick to ensure the right amount is added.

Step 4 Start Car for 10 seconds to allow oil to circulate, shut off the car and recheck with a dipstick. You may need to top up oil to fill mark.

Well, that’s it, you’ve officially changed the oil. Get the car packed and head to your next destination!

It is so important to make sure your vehicle is well maintained and running smoothly before embarking on a road trip. That peace of mind really helps to set a positive tone for the rest of your adventure.

My 15yo is starting to learn to drive. One thing my husband and I are insisting on is that she learn to change her own oil …(just hope no one tells her that I don’t know how to!)

I wish I had time to make some road trips! However things are so crazy here that won’t be happening any time soon! Although we are hoping to head to our family’s cabin soon.
